So you want to watch a new blockbuster movie in Germany? Hold on! How good is your Deutsch? Over 80% of movies shown in German Cinemas (Kinos) are usually dubbed in German. This means that the new Hollywood hit movie you wanted to watch so much is likely going to be in the German language. Unless your Deutsch is very good, you may end up disappointed.
But there is a way!
Most Cinemas in Germany take it for granted that you already know that the movie will be shown in Deutsch (German). Thus, they may not specifically write on their website that it is the German version that you will be watching. To be safe, it is better you assume that the movie will be in German language unless otherwise stated.
How To Know When You Can Watch a Movie in English or Other Language
Watching movies in Deutsch can be a good practice to learn Deutsch. However, if you really want to watch in English, then look out for movies with the word “OV” or “OmU” written beside them.
What Does “OV” or “OmU” Mean?
“OV” is an English word which stands for “Original Version”. When you see this, it means that the movie will be shown in its original version. This means that the soundtrack and the language will be exactly like it was at the point of production. If the movie was produced in an English-speaking country such as the US, UK, Canada, or Australia, then it is likely that the movie will be shown in the English language.
Note: “OV” does not necessarily mean that the language will be English. If a movie is produced in France and the Cinema writes “OV” beside it, then it means it will be shown in French. To be sure, check the country of production or just ask the cinema about the language.
What About “OmU”?
“OmU” is still “OV” with a subtitle. It is a combination of German and English words which means “Original mit Untertitel” (original with subtitle). It means that the movie will be shown in the original language with German subtitles.
When in doubt, don’t be afraid to call the cinema and ask them about the language of the upcoming movie.
