Berlin is increasing the cost of transportation in 2025 and this will affect expats that uses buses, trains (S-Bahn), and trams in and around Berlin. The authority at BVG earlier this month announced the price increase for using public transportation.
Cost of Train and Bus Ticket in Berlin
The new price increase means that passengers, on average, will pay around 7.5% more on a single ticket compared to the price paid in 2024. For instance, Currently – a single trip ticket for zone AB in Berlin currently cost €3.50 (2024 price). Starting from January 2025, this will now cost €3.80 for the same ticket. Similarly, a single ticket for the zone ABC will cost €4.70 in 2025 as against the current 2024 cost which is €4.40. In the same way, the cost of the four-trip ticket will be increased to €11.60 during this period.
If you have a subscription ticket, you will pay more for the subscription in 2025. The BVG already announced that the VBB environmental ticket for the zone AB will cost €76.70 in 2025 as well. The increase in the cost of using public transportation in Berlin not only affects expats but also students as well as the locals. If you regularly commute to work using public transportation, an alternative may be to subscribe to the Deutschland ticket. With Deutschland ticket, you can also use public transportation in other German cities as well as visit few other cities outside Germany for just a subscription cost of €58/month.
