The Cost for Deutschlandticket is Increasing in 2025

German government has just announced that the cost of the popular ‘Deutschlandticket’ will be increased starting January 2025. Up until now, Deutschlandticket cost just €49/month and has been seen as a huge success among travelers in Germany. But that is about to change.

From January 2025, you will have to pay €58 per month if you want to enjoy affordable and unlimited travel throughout Germany. German government believe that despite the recent hike in transportation cost, the price of Deutschlandticket is still very much affordable. Speaking on this development, Oliver Kirschner (Greens) – the transport minister for North Rhine-Westphalia said he believed that the German government  will be able to keep the ticket attractive. The Government still subsidizes the ticket for every German resident.

What Does the Increase in Deutschlandticket Cost Mean For You?

If you have already subscribed to the current €49 per month ticket and think that the €9 increase does not make any difference, then you do not need to do anything further. However, starting from January 2025, you will see an additional €9 increase debit from your account for a total of €58 to pay for this ticket subscription.

Is it Still Worth Getting the Deutschlandticket?

Despite the price hike, Deutschlandticket is still a great option for those who love traveling throughout Germany. It covers the cost of regional and local trains, including trams and buses through every city, town, and villages in Germany. When you are subscribed to this ticket, you can discover new cities or places. The ticket is mostly suited for people who travels outside their city for at least twice or more per month. Nevertheless, it all comes down to your needs.

Can You Travel Outside of Germany with Deutschlandticket?

German ticket allows you to travel to other countries that share borders with Germany. With this ticket, you can travel to the following locations:

  • Basel Badischer Bahnhof (Switzerland)
  • Salzburg, Kufstein and Innsbruck (Austria)
  • Liège and Brussels (Belgium)
  • Bolzano, Trento, Verona, Bologna and Venice (Italy)

Please note that you must use regional train and not ICE or high-speed train (EC and IC also not included). The ticket does not cover the cost of taking other trains, trams, and buses in the cities mentioned above. Once you arrive in these cities, you must buy their tickets to continue your journey.

Can I Switch Back to Berlin Ticket from Deutschlandticket?

Yes. If you are no longer satisfied with the cost of Deutschlandticket, you can cancel your current subscription and switch to Berlin-monthly ticket subscription which currently cost €29 at the time of writing this article. This ticket covers only Berlin AB zone and applies to Berlin residents. You should defer to your city transportation website if you live in other cities.
